James E. Voorhees is a self-made man who has won success on his own merits, placing his dependence upon the substantial qualities of industry, perseverance and honesty, and his constantly expanding powers have brought him from a lowly position to that of cashier of the Farmers National Bank of Amsterdam, one of the strong financial institutions of Montgomery County. He is one of the city's native sons and was born August 5, 1887. His parents, James and Margaret (McClumpha) Voorhees, are prominent residents of Amsterdam and members of old and highly respected families of this section of the state. The father is president of the above mentioned bank and ranks with the leading financiers of the Mohawk valley.

James E. Voorhees completed his education in the Amsterdam high school and began his financial career in the Farmers National Bank, starting at the bottom of the ladder. He showed a natural aptitude for banking, readily mastering the intricate details of modern finance, and as his experience and value increased, his well-directed efforts were rewarded by promotion. He was made cashier of the institution in 1924 and performs his work with accuracy and efficiency, displaying marked devotion to the interests entrusted to his care. He is courteous and obliging in his relations with the patrons of the bank and is one of its most popular officials. He has other interests, being a member of the board of directors of the Old Colony Thread Company of Fall River, Massachusetts, and the House Dress Apron Company, Incorporated, of Amsterdam; and treasurer of the Chuctanunda Gas Light company. Mr. John Leslie Voorhees, grandfather of James E. Voorhees, was one of the founders and acted as president for a number of years of the Farmers National Bank, of which the subject of this review is now cashier. Mr. J. Enders Voorhees, his uncle, was president until his death, and now James E. Voorhees is cashier and his father is president.

On September 20, 1916, Mr. Voorhees was married to Miss. Adele Golder, a daughter of  B. F. Golder of this city. Mr. and Mrs. Voorhees have two children: Mary Ann and James Voorhees. The former was born October 17, 1917, and the later June 17, 1920. Mr. Voorhees is identified with the Masonic order and has crossed the hot sands of the desert with the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. He is an Elk and belongs to the Antlers Country Club, while his political support is given to the republican party. He is loyal to his city, lending the weight of his influence to every project destined to promote its upbuilding and development, and his high character and thorough trustworthyness are attested by those who have had the opportunity to judge him at his true worth.
