Abraham Lincoln Van Horne
Surnames: Benton, Hewett, Hoff, Kinler, Mount, Newkirk, Shelp, Ten Eyck, Wagner, Young
Region: Montgomery Co., NY
The information in History of the Mohawk Valley, concerning the Van Horne family, is notoriously inaccurate, much of it based on family myth that is not longer confirmed by present day research. I am also a descendant of Abraham Van Horne, and his name was Abraham, not Abram. He signed his name Abra'm. Many people have apparently overlooked the apostrophe. I have copies of documents he signed as sheriff. Also, this family is not of Dutch descent as was previously thought. Matthys Cornelissen the immigrant who married Fytie Adam Brouwer and founded this family, was according to his marriage record from Jutland, which is in Denmark. In Jutland, there are two small towns and an administrative district named HORNE. Unfortunately, there are no records existing from the mid 1600s for that part of Jutland that would allow us to identify his ancestors. Additionally, there are no records showing Matthys ever in his lifetime used the surname Van Horne. Both of his sons used the name, Cornelius signing himself Van HOREN and Abraham using Van Horne and Van Horn. Cornelius's son Abraham always used Van Horne. In my line, with the exception of one generation we have always used Van Horne, the one generation dropped the "e". Some of you may think that Cornelius and Abraham were the sons of Abraham Van Horne and Marie Provoost. This Abraham was a descendant of Jan Cornelissen. I assure you, however, this is not so, there is a deed from 1722, in the possession of the Monmouth County Historical Society in New Jersey, that clearly states that Matthys Cornelissen was the father of Abraham Van Horne who other documents show to have been the brother of Cornelius. For a full explanation of this document, see the April 1976 issue of De Halve Maen, the 1722 Conveyance. I know of no record relating to the "first wife", Jane Ten Eyck. Doesn't mean it did not happen, but it is not in Our Van Horne Kindred by Elsie O. Hallenbeck. I am a descendant of Sheriff Abraham's second son, James Van Horne and Margaret Johnson, the daughter and granddaughter of Sir John and Sir William Johnson. |
I wish to thank Marleen for listing these corrections in the Van Horne family.
