De Witt Johnson Quackenbush, merchant, by his honorable, straightforward career has gained for himself the confidence and respect of the entire community in which he lives. He was born in Fultonville, Montgomery County, New York, on August 24, 1892, and is one of four children born to Henry V. and Elizabeth Nancy (Wemple) Quackenbush. Henry V. Quackenbush was born in the town of Glen, New York, and died in Fultonville, on April 30, 1921. He was a broom winder by trade. Elizabeth Nancy (Wemple) Quackenbush, mother of the subject of this sketch, was born in the town of Glen, and died in Fultonville, on January 16, 1919. She was the daughter of David S. and Gertrude Ann (Quackenbush) Wemple. Gertrude Ann (Quackenbush) Wemple was the daughter of David Scott and Elizabeth Quackenbush. David Scott Quackenbush was the son of John Scott Quackenbush and Nancy Quackenbush. John Scott Quackenbush was born May 5, 1786, and died on October 3, 1868, and his wife, Nancy Quackenbush, died on February 23, 1873, aged eighty-four years. John Scott Quackenbush was the son of Abram D. Quackenbush and his second wife, Catherine (Wemple) Quackenbush, whom he married in 1780. Abram D. Quackenbush was the son of Peter and Jane (Tenbroke) Quackenbush, who were married in Albany, New York, on December 24, 1702. Peter Quackenbush was the son of Jacob and Ann Elizabeth (Brower) Quackenbush, and was born in 1694 and married on August 11, 1716. Jacob Quackenbush was the son of Benjamin and Claesie (Webbers) Quackenbush. Benjamin Quackenbush was the son of Reynier Van Quackenbush, who was born in Holland, and married, first, Lysbeth Masten, and, second, Claesie Stille. Reynier Quackenbush was the son of Pieter Quackenbush. He was born in Holland in 1639, and married in Holland in 1658. They came to America and settled in Albany about 1660. Abram D. Quackenbush fought in the battle of Oriskany and was commissioned a lieutenant. His wife, Catherine (Wemple) Quackenbush, was born on March 17, 1762, and they were married in 1780. She was the daughter of Hendrick Wemple, Jr., and Aefje or Eva (Van Epps) Wemple. Hendrick Wemple, Jr., was born in 1730 and his wife was born in 1735, and they were married on January 1, 1755. Hendrick Wemple served as corporal and sergeant in the Tryon County Militia, New York, during the Revolutionary war.
De Witt Johnson Quackenbush acquired his education in the public schools of Fultonville, but left school at the age of fifteen years to enter the employ of Hasbrouck & Company, hay buyers, of New York city. He worked for their Fonda, New York, agent, Solomon Vedder, who bought and shipped the hay to New York, and acted in this capacity for two years. He then worked for the Empire Cooping Company of Fultonville, manufacturers of display chicken coops, and was there for four years as a varnisher, then became associated with the Fulton County Gas & Electric Company of Fonda, as an electrician, remaining with this concern for about eight years. On February 1, 1922, Mr. Quackenbush opened a store for the sale of electric supplies and also does contracting in the electrical line for the village of Fonda and the surrounding country. He is the pioneer in this vicinity in the sale of radios and supplies, and enjoys a liberal patronage in both lines of business.
On April 30, 1914, in Johnstown, New York, De Witt J. Quackenbush was united in marriage to Miss Grace E. Albrecht, who was born in Johnstown, on April 7, 1892, her parents being Antoine and Grace (Ackerbauer) Albrecht. Antoine Albrecht was born in Austria on January 18, 1852, and he and his wife are now living in Johnstown. His wife, Grace (Ackerbauer) Albrecht, was also born in Austria, on September 15, 1853. Mrs. Quackenbush is one of twelve children born to Mr. and Mrs. Albrecht:
Antoine, Stephen, Frank, Mary, Jacob, Catherine, Grace E., Rose, Louise, George, Harriet and Edith Albrecht. The five oldest children were born in Austria, and the seven youngest in Johnstown, New York. Mrs. Quackenbush is a member of St. Cecelia's Catholic Church of Fonda, and is a democrat in politics, but an independent voter.
Mr. Quackenbush is a member of the Royal Arcanum of Fonda; the Montgomery County Historical Society, and the Community Club of Fonda. His church associations are with St. Cecelia's Catholic church of Fonda, and he is affiliated with the democratic party, but is an independent voter. For diversion Mr. Quackenbush turns to automobiling and all outdoor sports. All the business matters of Mr. Quackenbush are conducted carefully and successfully and in all his acts he displays an aptitude for successful management.
