served in the late war as private in the 1st N.Y. Light Artillery. Was on
provost duty in Jefferson until January, 1864, when, with his command, he
went to the front, and was engaged in the battle of the Wilderness, where
he received a severe wound, resulting in the loss of the third finger of
the left hand. He was soon after assigned to duty in the Invalid Corps stationed
at Washington, until December, when he joined his command, near Petersburgh,
and remained in active service up to Lee's surrender, near Appomattox, and
was promoted to rank of corporal. In the engagement at the Wilderness his
artillery horses were all shot and all of his drivers wounded, and they were
obliged to abandon their guns. After the surrender, in April, 1865, they
were ordered to report at Washington, and on the march accidentally cut his
foot severely, and narrowly escaped the loss of his foot by gangrene getting
into the wound. Was discharged from Campbell, U.S.A. Hospital, at Washington,
July 7, 1865. He is a member of the Chippewa County Veteran Soldiers' and

was born on 1 Jul 1823 in Herkimer Co., NY. He was living about 1838 in Jefferson
Co., NY. He was living in 1847 in Syracuse, Onondaga Co., NY. He was a Wagon
Maker in 1854 in Waupaca, Waupaca Co., WI. In this year he built the first
wagon ever made at this place. He was among the losers in the fire of May
16, 1872. He is at present dealing in wagons and carriages, and is agent
for D.S. Morgan's celebrated Triumph reapers and binders, and for the Clipper
mower, made by the same manufacturer. Proprietor of Waupaca Wagon Works.
He was living in 1881 in Waupaca, Waupaca Co., WI. (2) P. A. House proprietor
Waupaca Wagon Works; born in 1823 Herkimer Co, NY his ancestors settled in
the Mokawk Valley prior to the Revolution; at fifteen years of age P A House
left his native county of Jefferson Co. NY served six years apprenticeship
and began at twenty-one with $36 capital; was for seven years in Syracuse
and Binghamton, NY and in 1854 located in Waupaca. In the fall of that year
he built the first wagon ever built on the Indian Reserve. It is still in
use by T. Baker, a farmer of Waupaca Township. Mr House is now doing the
best business in his line between Oshkosh and Eau Claire; he manufactures
from 75 to 100 wagons annually; employs twelve men. In 1872, he lost nearly
everything by fire; re-built his shops near the south end of Main Street
and is again in good shape for business; he is now rebuilding his residences,
which was partially burned April 6, 1881; he had lived in the house twenty-four
years. Mr. House is a Baptist, a Templar and Freemason; his wife was Lydia
M Welch of Washington Co., NY. They have an only daughter having lost three

Register of Deeds, in 1876; was elected Clerk of Court; was superintendent
of schools in Waupaca County. He belongs to the I.O.O.F.; is N. G. elect;
he also belongs to the Masons in Medford. He was married to Adeline M. SEVERANCE
about 1852.
