| Charles G. Duffy and Margaret (Allen) Duffy moved to Fort Plain in 1873,
where George Duffy was born in 1874. He is the youngest of five children:
John, who died December 18, 1914; Julia, widow of Will J. Diefendorf (Mr.
Diefendorf died October 12, 1923); Bernard and Charles G. Duffy of Buffalo;
and George of Fort Plain, Montgomery County, New York.
In 1892 Charles G. Duffy, Bernard Duffy and John Duffy organized the firm of Duffy Brothers and built their first silk throwing factory on Reid street, Fort Plain. Other factories were later built in Buffalo, and Bernard Duffy and Charles G. Duffy removed to that city. In 1902 the business was incorporated under the name of the Duffy Silk Company, Incorporated, which operates five factories in Buffalo and one in Fort Plain. Mr. Abraham Fox Nellis of St. Johnsville, became interested in the company in 1902 and was its secretary from 1902 until his death at his home in Rochester in 1923. In October, 1911, Mr. George Duffy was married to Miss Bertha E. Dunckel, daughter of Ervin and Nancy C. Dunckel of Fort Plain. Mr. and Mrs. Duffy occupy a handsome home at the corner of Center and Orchard streets, Fort Plain. The Duffy home, with its attractive grounds and garden, forms one of the beauty spots of the town. The drawing-room, on the north side of the house, is fifty-two by thirty-one feet, with twelve-foot ceiling and many interesting architectural features. It is a favorite meeting place of the Fort Plain Chapter, D. A. R., with which Mrs. Duffy is actively identified, serving as its present regent, having been elected in 1921. Mr. George Duffy is secretary and treasurer of the Duffy Silk Company, Incorporated. He is a former president of the Fort Plain National Bank and one of its vice presidents. Mr. Duffy is a member of the Fort Plain Club, the Fort Rensselaer Club of Canajoharie, the Little Falls Country Club, and the Antlers Club of Amsterdam. |
