Jesse de Forest along with Jean de la Montagne and nine other men of French or Walloon origin, sailed from Leiden, Zuid Holland 1 July 1623 aboard the "Pigeon", Hoping to find a good location for a colony in South America. After a delay for ship repairs in Co. Kent England they arrived 16 Oct.at the mouth of the Amazon. Of the French and Walloon men only Jesse, Jean and Louis le Maire remained ashore when on 1 January 1624 the "Pigeon" sailed from the mouth of the Oyapock River ( which today forms the border between Brazil and French Guiana) to return to the Netherlands. On 13 Oct 1624 Jesse was felled by sunstroke and a high fever. He d. 22 Oct. and was buried that day. (Joe Pabol, eaglejoep@comcast.net)
